bilirubin

A pigment produced when the liver processes waste products. A high bilirubin level causes yellowing of the skin.

High level of bilirubin can be of direct or indirect reacting bilirubin.

Massive hemolysis is suggested if there is a marked elevation in total bilirubin along with a significant drop in hemoglobin and significant reticulocytosis.
